Pennsdale Pennsylvania
Steeped in 18th and 19th Century History
with Underground Railroad Ties
Original Springhouse ca. 1797
The Mansion House ca. 1804
Part of the Underground Railroad in the 1800's, this beautiful sandstone home
is sited on 13.27 acres in the heart of Pennsdale, Pennsylvania.
Originally constructed in 1797 by John and Elizabeth Carpenter, the Springhouse, which still stands on the property, is the only "primitive" house in Muncy Township that is still standing similar in size to the log structures built by other settlers in the 1790's that are now long gone. The house was built over a spring on sloping ground, has two rooms on the main level and an attic that was used for sleeping and a stone marker at the base of the entrance with the Carpenters names and 1979 date etched into it. In later years the wood portion was added.
The Main "Sister" House, a.k.a. The Mansion House, that sits adjacent to the Springhouse was constructed in 1804 with one- and two-story additions added on in later years. Inside you will find original wood floors, beamed ceilings, a walk-in fireplace with the hive entrance of a beehive oven and stone floor inlay that once served as the kitchen, two corner decorative fireplaces previously used for heating, Dutch doors, winder staircases, Limestone walls with 400-million-year-old brachiopod fossils, built-in bookshelves, cabinets and storage nooks and more.
The floor plan of the Main House is quite expansive with voluminous rooms on the main level including formal living and dining rooms, an eat-in kitchen with breakfast nook, large center island with seating and a pasta/coffee bar, a covered and screened in sun porch and heated sunroom with two walls of windows that frame the picturesque site and overlooks the pond. The upper-level features a primary bedroom with sitting room, two secondary bedrooms, a large landing perfect for a reading nook, a full bathroom and a large storage closet. The attic is finished with ample space for storage and accessed via a set of winder stairs.
The 13.27 acre site is heavily treed with several varieties, includes perennial gardens, an in-ground swimming pool, an outdoor stone fireplace, grassy fields and a private pond with dock for non-motorized recreation and stocked with bluegill, sunfish, catfish for fishing and enjoyed by muskrats, geese and a mink or two.
There is an attached 2-car garage, a detached 1-car garage, a 1200 sq.ft heated and insulated steel workshop/garage and a livestock barn built in 1976 with 3 horse stalls.
Steeped in history, this property has been featured in many historical accountings of the Muncy area including being identified as a part of the underground railroad. While there are no "known" hidden rooms or spaces within, the connection is surely because of the ownership by prominent Quaker families that identified this home as a sanctuary for escaping slaves. Anther notable visitor includes President Hoover. The property was featured in a painting by locally renowned artist David Seybold.
